Hispanic Culture in Detroit

Rich in its diversity, Detroit hosts different cultures. Travel to the south west part of the city and guess what, you are in a Hispanicized Detroit, named as "The Mexican Town".
Aroma of the delicious Mexican food coming out from the kitchens of around a dozen of restaurants, each one of it is best in its own way, light on pocket, delicious on taste buds.

Initially the area witnessed a rise in Hispanic community as Detroit attracted job seekers to its magnificent motor industry in the early 1920’s.
When the immigrants from the other continent packed their bags, they packed their culture, food habits, lifestyle and tradition which very beautifully reflects in each and every thing you come across in the Mexican Town.

Having an experience of what festivals look like for Hispanics, travel to the area in May, and you will see the vibrant Sinco De Mayo celebration, which is celebrated commemorating the battle Hispanics won. Visit the place in November to be a part of the Day of the Dead, which happens to be pretty much like Halloween.

The place has a couple of grocery stores which sells imports from Mexico, one can have a good ingredient collection for a Mexican recipe prepared at the dining table.
Ah, who can stay away from the original tequila? The best of it can be tasted at the bars in the Mexican Town.

South-west Detroit comes under district 6 of the city council in Detroit Municipal Corporation, and the young lady representing this area keenly keeps up with projects aiming towards preserving the Hispanic Culture.
There is a very different type of vibe which one can feel in Southwest Detroit, and is indeed a source of attraction for everyone who lives or passes by Detroit” explains Raquel Castaneda Lopez, the council member, with great enthusiasm.

The gift shops offer you craft and art work, the clay toy of the classic Mexican man with the hat is so cute that resisting from buying it will be impossible.

Ah ! How did I miss it, The Bakery is another awesome attraction offering really mouth-watering and soothing desserts and pies, for the price less than elsewhere in the city.
The rich Hispanic culture willingly merges and here we are, the advantage is for us, There is a “Camino” that takes us in ‘Mexico”.

There is a short documentary about the place, which I directed and can be worth watching in case you too are one of those who just love new places.

Enjoy :)
